Big Jim is actually Alfred Romney, and his snack bar is an island institution where locals regularly gather for games of dominos. Island icon Bankie Banx’s Dune Preserve is an island hotspot day and night. The restaurant’s menu features seafood, soups and salads. At night, the action moves immediately over to the Planet Dune Nightclub, a treehouse of sorts, where live music regularly happens on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. Bankie often graces the stage himself, accompanied by a number of local and international artists and famous friends. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to sunset. Planet Dune rises at 9 p.m. and sets some time before the sun comes up.
It’s easy to be enticed into this attractive red, yellow and white building with wooden shutters. The chef and owner Vernon Hughes brings a wealth of experience and skills he honed while working at local and international restaurants. The menu includes a wide variety of meals ranging from sandwiches and salads to sirloin steak and more elaborate dishes such as Pan Seared Lemon Pepper Grouper.

Generally, Sandy Ground is the "hotspot" on Fridays and Saturdays, while Sundays and Wednesdays the crowds move to Shoal Bay East.
